Awakening
by Nicole Petroski

I entered this fluorescent world
Accompanied by a cacophony of voices
And surrounded by the rhythm of my electric pulse

I felt my consciousness rising slowly
From the depths of a leaden ocean
And I woke up distressed and gasping for breath

Another chapter had been written on my skin
Blood like ink flowing swiftly through my veins
All of my being was drawn deeply within
Yet it seemed I was no longer my own

I was just a body on the table
With scars the only evidence
That I'd been there at all
